Garsfontein residents get ‘warning’ for hosting street braai

Photos of the braai that took place at a complex on Lassie Street were shared on a community Facebook group where one of the residents called for another braai.

A group of families in Garsfontein extension 10 were given a warning by police after hosting a street braai in the area.

Photos of the braai that took place at a complex on Lassie Street were shared on a community Facebook group where one of the residents wrote:

“First Lassie Street lockdown braai with neighbours. Was awesome!!! Each of us respecting lockdown on our own premises.  When is the next one?”

It is alleged that some residents were outside their yards and others on sidewalks.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Vish Naidoo said the incident took place on 18 April.

“This matter was attended to by the local police station. The families were ordered to stop what they were doing and were warned that if they were to do that again they would be arrested,” he said.

When asked why the residents were not arrested for the contravention of lockdown regulations Naidoo did not respond.

DA MPL Michael Shackleton said they had received reports from concerned residents of the complex who alleged that some of their fellow residents were not adhering to the social distancing regulations as they often sat outside their houses as a group and some were riding quad bikes around the complex.

“There are also visitors coming to the complex visiting their friends and family members,” he said.

“Some of the concerned residents claim they have been reporting such incidents to the police, but nothing has been done to enforce the lockdown regulations and arrest those that break the law.

According to the lockdown regulations, all people were confined to their place of residence, unless strictly for the purpose of performing an essential service, or obtaining essential goods or services.

Social gatherings, sporting activities and social visits were prohibited during lockdown.

“Failure to adhere to the lockdown regulations is a serious offence and offenders must be arrested and face the full might of the law,” Shackleton said.

He said DA would put pressure on both the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety and the Gauteng SAPS Provincial Commissioner to ensure that lockdown regulations were enforced at this specific complex.
