Warning as joggers are targeted in Centurion
Joggers in Centurion are urged to avoid the following hotspots where other joggers have been targeted in the past couple of days.
Monitor Net has urged joggers and cyclists to avoid hotspots in Centurion after a jogger was robbed of a cellphone and a bicycle was stolen.
“We want to warn residents to refrain from jogging along the area behind the Amberfield estate after various incidents of robberies have been reported,” Monitor Net spokesperson, JP le Roux told Rekord on Tuesday morning.
On Tuesday morning patrol vehicles from Monitor Net were deployed to the area behind the Amberfield estate in Centurion after two incidents of robberies were reported by joggers.
Le Roux said two incidents were called in, one of a cellphone that was robbed and of a bicycle that was stolen.
“The robbers are armed and allegedly fired a shot this morning when the bicycle was stolen,” Le Roux explained.
He explained the open field behind the Amberfield estate is a very popular spot for joggers and cyclists but urged residents to make use of a safer route that has more “eyes and ears”.
“Avoid quiet and secluded roads,” Le Roux said.
“The open field is believed to be part of a development in the area, I am not sure what the plans are with regards to the development.”
The current hotspots where joggers have been robbed in the past few days include, Capensis Street, Apiesdoring Street, Ruimte Street and Philirene Street.
“Monitor Net has already added more patrol vehicles in the area to monitor the new crime trend.”
Le Roux warned residents to be vigilant and to avoid the hotspots when walking, jogging and cycling in the area.
Over the weekend reports of robberies in the area of pretend joggers targeting runners were shared on social media.
It is alleged three runners were targeted by five pretend joggers and were robbed of their shoes, watches and cellphones on Lenchen Road close to the substation at around 07:00 in the morning. Another attack allegedly took place in Waterfall.
The police could not confirm any cases.
