Help for the needy in Eersterust
“Food has thus far become the single most important thing to everyone who has been crippled by the lockdown and movement restrictions imposed due to the virus.”
The Covid-19 outbreak and national lockdown has caused many problems and difficulties for communities across the country.
Which is why several good Samaritans across Pretoria have taken hands to help the needy during this time.
In Eersterust several organisations and residents were doing the same.
“Food has become the single most important thing to everyone who has been crippled by the lockdown due to the virus,” said Monique Hammond of Friends of the Needy.
“The government have been unable to provide as much assistance as they anticipated would have been required, but the community of Eersterust suffered most as residents rely on odd jobs to provide for their families.”

She said the two organisations, Friends of the Needy and The Movement, joined hands to help the community with food parcels, cooked meals and clothes.
Hammond said they started with the project about two weeks after the national lockdown started.
“The project was started after numerous issues across the area were identified and the need became very big,” she said.
She said Eersterust Action Organisation (EAO) collaborated with them shortly after they started.
“We thank EAO for collaborating with us to ease the transition of the handing out. We are also thankful for community members who availed themselves to help,” she said.
“As a community we remain hopeful and strong. We know all efforts from both organisations will continue to assist as the traction from private businesses and donors are becoming stronger to ensure the community is sorted.”

Hammond said Kit Kat and other organisations also assisted with donations.
“Residents made R100 challenge pledges. TFG and SKK feeding schemes donated cooked meals, which we could evenly distribute,” she said.
“Angels Helping Hands and SMAT donated food parcels and cooked meals that were also evenly distributed.
“Friends of the Needy and The Movement would like to call on other corporates and organisations to continue to assist and help,” she said.
“We need more assistance with starting up the food bank. The groundwork has been done, now we just need financial assistance.”
She said any donations were welcome.
“The donations are becoming less and less, but we are taking it a week at a time,” she said.
