New fitness craze gains momentum

“We help people understand themselves better and this changes you, changes how you think and gets you out of your comfort zone.”

A new youth fitness movement, Fitness Icon, is taking Pretoria by storm.

Fitness Icon is not just about getting people in shape but also a confidence booster.

The movement started back in 2017, under a different name, said one of the founders, Rene Richter.

“Although the concept began in 2017, it was only implemented later in 2018, when we started with about four people. We were part of a gym and MacD (MacDavaan Modillane) wanted to do something different with the group that attended cardio classes,” she said.

She said over the months, they started recruiting a few people from Pretoria who wanted change.

“We do all kinds of workout which include cardio dance, Zumba and body conditioning. This movement caters to all, you don’t need to be fit or a good dancer to join, all you need is to give it a try and it will change your life,” she said.

Team leader MacDavaan Modillane said the aim of the movement was to inspire and lead the youth into a healthy lifestyle.

“This is more than encouraging the youth of South Africa to keep fit and look after their bodies. We are a diverse and multicultural movement. We do different kinds of dances and cardio that no-one has seen.”

“The goal is to live a healthier lifestyle, without having to compromise the little things we enjoy in life,” Modillane said.

He said anyone was welcome to join and did not have to pay a fee to be part of this unique movement.

“Although we don’t offer therapy, we help people understand themselves better because this changes you, changes how you think and gets you out of your comfort zone.”

Modillane said the mission was to bring Fitness Icon into schools.

“We provide cardio, strength, and athlete-based training programmes and group classes to gyms and various businesses. We are a Cardio Dance Evolution and we make it fun.”

He said the team will be showcasing their skills at Central Square in Menlyn Maine on 29 February.
