Surprise for north woman on street lamp posts

An estate agent and a friend put their heads together about possible new advertising material when the friend comes up with a novel idea.

A real estate agent in the north of Pretoria recently wished his wife happy birthday using advertising boards posted on street lamp posts.

Theo Erasmus, a Montana resident since 2001, said he decided to use the advertising space he had already paid for to wish his wife of 16 years happy birthday on 16 May.

“My two daughters, Kaylene and Tyla, helped me put up the signs the afternoon before her birthday. They were very excited about the surprise,” Erasmus told Rekord.

“We pay a lot of money each month for advertising costs to rent that ad space and the previous ads were of houses I had in the market, most of which were sold.”

Erasmus and a friend, Albert Bredenhann, put their heads together about possible new advertising material when he suggested that he put in a message to his wife because he can’t sell houses under the current lockdown in any case.

“I thought it was a great plan to surprise her for her birthday by proclaiming how much I love her.”

Erasmus said the world has become a very depressing, drab place because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“There are also extremely difficult economic conditions as a result of the lockdown. It was fun to do something fresh and out of the box with a positive message of love, humour and hope.”

He said he received hundreds of messages on Facebook from women who tagged their husbands and told them “to pull up their socks and be more romantic”.

“It was great fun,” said Erasmus.

Erasmus began selling homes in 2001 after his dreams of becoming a professional rugby player were shattered by an ankle injury.

In 2005, Erasmus founded his own business which will celebrate its 15th anniversary later in May.

The residential real estate industry will only be allowed to operate under level 2 of the lockdown, making it currently impossible to legally show houses to potential buyers.

He says it was really hard and frustrating not to be able to work right now.

“But we understand the seriousness of the matter and try to accommodate clients as much as possible by communicating by phone or via Zoom video sessions. We look forward to returning and being able to do our job again without restriction; we know a lot of clients’ circumstances have changed a lot over the last few months, so we would like to help, advise and encourage where we can.”
