Houses near spruits continue to be targeted

Police warn residents living along spruits to be vigilant as criminals are targeting them.

Houses located along spruits in the east of Pretoria continue to be targeted by criminals, following an attempted robbery in Maroelana.

CSI security spokesperson Dana Bloem said they recently received an alert from a resident of two suspicious-looking men running down Nuwe Hoop Street towards the spruit in Maroelana.

“Armed reaction units were immediately despatched and upon arrival began searching the area for the unknown men,” Bloem said.

“At about the same time, we had also received a call from a client in 23rd Street reporting loud screaming from somewhere in the area.”

He said while investigating one of their security vehicles made contact with another resident on 23rd Street, who reported that his gate motor had just been stolen.

“It then became apparent that the two suspicious-looking men seen running had in fact stolen the motor,” Bloem said.

The gate motor was later recovered at a nearby bush along the spruit.

“We suspected that the thieves may have ditched the gate motor in their haste to escape. So we retraced the portion of the getaway route the two suspects have taken and expanded our search to the surrounding area,” he said.

“One of our officers spotted a dirty white sack tucked under a bush in Pinaster Ave. Upon closer inspection, they discovered a gate motor inside.”

Bloem said the motor was returned to its owner.

The two robbers, however, managed to escape.

Police spokesperson Warrant officer Duane Lightfoot urged members of the public who live in complexes next to the spruit to be vigilant when it comes to securing their property.

A similar incident was reported at a complex in Garsfontein a week ago in which a group of suspicious people were spotted inside a complex.

“Please see to it that your fencing is of a good standard and regularly checked for damage.”

He said police were doing everything in their ability to ensure the safety of the community, but “could not be everywhere all of the time”.

Residents were advised to report any suspicious-looking people to the police by phoning 10111.
