Crime expected to increase in the Moot as level 3 hits
As security companies expected crime to increase during level 3, they urged residents to take caution.

As the Moot entered level 3 of the national lockdown this week, security companies in the area said they expected that crime would increase.
We expect that crime would increase during level 3, but we are ready for it, said Reinhard Raschke of MCS Security.
It makes sense that it will increase as there will now be more vehicles and people on the streets.
Raschke said armed robberies have already started increasing, especially at small businesses.
Many people are going back to work now and house burglaries are definitely going to increase as well.
Raschke urged residents to stay alert and make sure their alarms are on when they leave the house.
Kilnerpark Security spokesperson Ancelize van der Kooi also said they expected crime to increase during level 3.
Actually crime already started increasing during level 4, especially violent crimes, she said.

These past two weeks we have seen an increase in several crimes.
She said other crimes that also increased included business and house break-ins.
Theft of vehicles also increased drastically, she said.
Van der Kooi said gate motor theft was also picking up in the area.
Every day we receive reports of gate motor thefts in the area, she said.
As security companies expected crime to increase during level 3, they urged residents to sharpen their preparedness.
Residents need to be more vigilant and remember to activate their alarm systems when they leave their home for work,Van der Kooi said.
The common rule of hijacking and theft of vehicles still apply, make sure your vehicle is properly locked when you go to the shop.

She said motorists should also lock their vehicles when driving.
Raschke agreed residents should be more aware of their surroundings.
Do not leave computers and handbags in cars, he said.
Turn on your alarm at all times when you go out.
Check whether you are not being followed, especially when you return from the bank, he said.
Moot residents can contact their security company or police if any suspicious persons or actions occur in their areas.
He said a factor that contributed to the success in safety in the area was good co-operation between the several security companies and police in the area.
If we work together, we can make a positive change in the area, he said.
In a statement by AfriForum, they said neighbourhood watches could resume work in their respective areas, which meant that AfriForum’s East Moot and Moot neighbourhood watches could resume their work in the area.
AfriForum’s 150 or so security structures nationwide will continue to safeguard their communities without hesitation, said AfriForum community safety head Ian Cameron.
We are ready to support structures in the fight against the possible spate of crime that could result from the economic damage caused by the lockdown.
