Tough police action yields 300 arrests

The arrests were made during police operations including foot patrols, raids, surveillance initiatives and road blocks.

About 300 people were arrested for various offences across Pretoria at the weekend.

The arrests were made during police operations including foot patrols, raids, surveillance initiatives and road blocks.

Police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela said the arrests were for offences ranging from shoplifting, assault, possession of drugs, to murder.

“Police maintained high visibility through multi-faceted operations that among others were directed at preventing burglaries at local schools, illegal sale of alcohol, enforcement of lockdown regulations and suspect tracing,” said Mavimbela.

“Following the call by Tshwane police district commissioner Major-General Tommy Mthombeni on police to heighten visibility around the local schools, officers paid more than 450 visits to local schools within the four sub-districts of Tshwane over the weekend, to discourage criminals from breaking into schools.”

He said at least three liquor traders were arrested for trading outside the stipulated hours in Olievenhoutbosch and Mamelodi East, while 15 suspects were nabbed for drinking in public.

Nine motorists were also arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

“The suspects are expected to appear in various courts in Tshwane soon.”

At the conclusion of the operations, Mthombeni urged officers to “up their game and ensure that gains made by the police thus far, are not reversed to tilt the scale in favour of criminals”.
