Correctional services Covid-19 cases climb to 1 519
Department says 573 officials have contracted the virus thus far.
The Department of Correctional Services confirmed that their total number of Covid-19 cases stood at 1 519 on Sunday.
Departmental spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said 573 officials and 946 inmates contracted the virus thus far.
Of the new cases recorded were 23 officials.

“New cases have been constrained as daily cases seem to be plateauing. Recoveries started at a low base, but have been incremental, which is encouraging.”
He said active cases stood at 915, while recoveries were at 592.
Twelve people within the department have died after contacting Covid-19.
The total provincial breakdown was as follows:
– Eastern Cape: officials 172; inmates 670; recoveries 148
– Western Cape: officials 328; inmates 248; recoveries 410
– Gauteng: officials 53; inmates 26; recoveries 27
– KwaZulu-Natal: officials 9; inmates 2; recoveries 2
– Limpopo: officials 4; recovery 2
– North West: officials 4; recoveries 2
– Mpumalanga: officials 4; recoveries 2
– Northern Cape: official 4 recoveries 2
– Free State: official 4; recoveries 2
– Department’s head office: official 3; recovery 1
