More than 200 arrested in Tshwane

Over 100 litres of alcohol were confiscated when liquor traders who allegedly sold alcohol outside the stipulated operating hours were arrested.

More than 200 people were arrested in Tshwane for various crimes including liquor traders who allegedly sold alcohol outside the stipulated operating hours over the weekend.

“In the process, over 100 litres of alcohol were confiscated in Mabopane, Loate and Soshanguve on Saturday,” said police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela.

“Five liquor traders who were arrested following the confiscations are expected to be charged for trading in alcohol illegally.”

Mavimbela said the 275 arrests were as a result of police officers and whistleblowers who fearlessly did their part in fighting crime.

He said the other 270 suspects were caught during raids, stop-and-searches, roadblocks, vehicle and foot patrols.

“They are expected to face charges like shoplifting, drinking in public, assault, violation of a protection order, robbery, dealing in dagga and malicious damage to property before making their first appearance at various courts in Tshwane.”

Speaking shortly after the operation in Soshanguve, on Saturday, Major General Tommy Mthombeni commended whistleblowers for “continuously keeping the police on their toes by providing information that leads to the success of police operations”.

He urged members of the public to report crime anonymously by calling the Crime Stop Hotline on 08600 10111 or by using the MySAPS app.
