Couple tied up for six hours on north smallholding attack

“They were tied with barbed wire and their faces covered.”

A couple from the north of Pretoria were held hostage for about six hours during a smallholding attack and robbery in the area.

The incident happened around 22:00 on Wednesday evening at a smallholding in Hammanskraal, the victim’s son said.

“They were tied up until around 04:00,” he said.

He said the robbers gained access to the smallholding by cutting the wiring on the farm gate entrance.

“After gaining access to the premises, they broke through the bathroom window’s burglar bars,” he said.

“My mother and her partner were tied up with barbed wire and their faces covered.”

The son said their two vehicles and several items were stolen during the robbery.

He said after the suspects left the house, his mother managed to free herself and get help from the neighbours.

Around 06:20, the two vehicles were retrieved and the trailer with some of the stolen goods was found later that same day.

Police could not comment at the time of going to press.

This brings the total number of attacks on smallholdings in the north of Pretoria to 11 since last week Tuesday.

Rekord reported earlier that the Pretoria North sector 3 CPF decided to implement several suggestions, including increased patrols, within “a few hours” of an emergency meeting held to discuss the spate of crimes in the Haakdoornboom area.

Marcos Grassini of the Pretoria North sector 3 CPF told Rekord that crime in the area has been on the rise over the past few years.

“Over the last two years, we had a massive increase in violent crimes such as assault, rape, murder, hijacking, spiking of vehicle tyres, disturbance of the peace, child prostitution, neglect and abuse.”
