Woman shot, killed for cellphone in north farm attack

“It is alarming. A senseless crime. Just a cellphone was taken and a woman had to pay for it with her life.”

An elderly woman was shot and killed and her husband was assaulted, all for a cellphone on a smallholding north of Pretoria on Sunday evening.

Alan en Martie Wolmarans became the latest victims of the shocking rise in farm attacks in the north of Pretoria.

Maksimum Responders were called to a scene in Grootvlei Oos, a smallholding area in the north of Pretoria, after a woman was shot and killed.

On Sunday evening, security responders reacted to a call out to a property where an elderly woman was pronounced dead following an attack around 21:30.

Hillel Coetzer, AfriForum’s head of safety for the northern region said one of their members, Marius Muller, was also on the scene last night where the well-known couple was attacked.

“It is alarming. A senseless crime. Just a cellphone was taken and a woman had to pay for it with her life.”

Coetzer said four suspects were allegedly involved in the attack.

“A group of suspects gained entry to the property by jumping over the wall. It’s still unknown exactly what happened,” Juan du Plessis, spokesperson for GAC Risk Solutions said.

Du Plessis expressed his condolences towards the Wolmarans family who have been business owners in the area for decades.

According to the limited information currently available, the woman was shot and she passed away on the scene while her husband was severely beaten up. He was taken to hospital.

Du Plessis thanked Maksimum security for their prompt response.

“Thanks to the quick response of Maksimum the suspects didn’t have enough time to ransack the house.”

Maksimum Security spokesperson Wynand Delport confirmed the incident but did not to comment about the details surrounding the attack.

Delport described the incident as sad and difficult.

He said a reaction vehicle immediately responded when the panic alarm was activated.

“They have been good clients of us for years,” Delport said.

Coetzer urged the community to be extra vigilant and to join local security companies and the CPF and to ensure their properties were properly safeguarded to assist in the fight against crime.
