Cameras to combat crime in the west

“We were able to set up three cameras, thanks to donations and assistance by residents.”

The sector 4 CPF in the west of Pretoria has installed cameras in an effort to fight crime in the area.

“Since last year, we have already put up three PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras in the Hercules CPF sector 4 area,” said CPF chairperson Nico van Vuuren.

“A PTZ camera is a camera capable of remote and zoom control.”

Van Vuuren said the camera project was a community initiative and the installation was done with the help of Stefan Renke.

“We were able to set up three cameras, thanks to donations and assistance by residents.”

However, Van Vuuren said they did not plan to stop at there.

“We want to try and set up as many cameras as possible so we can monitor as many places as possible,” he said.

He said it costs about R13 000 to set up a single camera.

“The cameras are manned from our community centre,” he explained.

“Once we notice something suspicious, we can pass it on to the security companies and also to the Greenlight project, which is also based in sector 4.”

Van Vuuren said he was very excited about the project.

“We are very positive about it and feel it is a step in the right direction,” he said.
