Thousands in the north benefit from PPE donations
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) donated over 3 000 masks to schools, orphanages and old age homes in the area earlier this week.
Thousands of people in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, benefited from the donation of over 3 000 masks to schools, orphanages and old age homes in the area earlier this week.
The donation by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) was made to Masakhane Primary School; Sikhululekile High School; Phuthanang Primary School; Wallmansthal High School; Ikatisong High School and Kutullo Disability Day Care centre.
The orphanages and old age homes which received their share of the mask donation were Tshwaranang orphanage; Luvuyo orphanage home and Grace of Hope while the other were Lerato la Bagolo old age home along with Ikwezi le Themba.
“The masks will be used to support learners, front-line staff and essential workers in the schools, orphanages and old age homes ensuring that education, in a disadvantaged community, continues and that the vulnerable are protected and cared for,” CSIR said in a statement.
The donation also formed part of the annual Nelson Mandela Day celebrations.

“The CSIR’s objective is to provide a safe learning environment for school children and also alleviate risk in living spaces where older residents reside, in order to curb the spread of Covid-19.”
Acting human capital group executive Andile Mabindisa said the council was contributing to the government’s call to assist and protect vulnerable communities during the pandemic which was also in line with their mandate – to improve the lives of South Africans.
“During this pandemic, pupils and the elderly are most vulnerable.
“CSIR wants to ensure that learners, especially in disadvantaged schools, are still able to attend school in a safe and enabling environment during this difficult time,” he said.
Mabindisa said the elderly were identified as being at risk of infection by the deadly virus and has less chances of recovery.
“They must be protected all the time,” he concluded.
