A scam where pensioners in the north of Pretoria were given counterfeit bank notes had once again reared its ugly head, police warned at the weekend.
“The police in Ga-Rankuwa have noted with great concern that some pensioners have allegedly been receiving counterfeit bank notes from the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa),” police spokesperson Captain Matthews Nkoadi said.
This after “a number” of fraud dockets were said to have been opened for investigation in recent weeks.
“Preliminary investigations proved that most of the victims who claimed to have been paid in fake notes only realised it when they tried to purchase some goods at local supermarkets,” he said.
The pensioners reportedly had their allegedly counterfeit money returned to them by shopkeepers when they attempted to make purchases.
“This trend was reported some few years ago and it seems to be rearing its ugly head again in the Ga-Rankuwa area,” he said.
Nkoadi called on members of the public which could lead to the arrested of the perpetrators to contact police on their Crime Stop number on 08600-10111 or through their My SAPS App.
