Police on trail of suspects after Centurion jewellery store robbery foiled

One of the would-be robbers was shot at least seven times by an armed member of the public.

Lyttelton police were pursuing three people in connection with the failed armed robbery at Centurion mall on Saturday afternoon.
Police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said investigators were following up on information in order to trace and arrest the outstanding suspects who fled the scene.

Several men tried to attack a jewellery store but a member of the public fired several shots at one of the the armed would-be robbers.
“During the attempt, one of the civilians in the store was able to defend the lives of the persons in the store by utilising his firearm. During this action one of the suspects was injured and three others fled the scene,” Miller said.

The group of would-be robbers was not only believed to have entered the store with the intention of robbing it but to rob shoppers of their belongings as well.

The suspect, who was reportedly shot at least seven times, was taken to hospital under police guard.

In a brief statement, Centurion mall said the safety of customers, tenants and employees was a priority.
