‘Spinning’ cars causing havoc in Soshanguve
Residents allege that “scores of people” are seen gathered at the old bus stop in Block AA without masks or practising social distancing to watch these cars spinning.
Soshanguve residents are complaining that police are doing nothing about illegal so-called “street spinning” in the area.
Street spinning is an illegal motorsport in which drivers spin their cars in a circle in residential areas.
They are worried that the crowds watching the street spinning could also present a possible health hazard under the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking to Record, residents said the spinning started during alert level 3 and police were failing to intervene.

Musa Makhoba said he did not understand how adults can be so irresponsible by compromising their own health.
Makhoba blamed police for not enforcing the law and not caring enough to do something about the problem.
“They simply do not care, there’s a police station opposite this place where they spin, are you telling me police do not know anything about it?”
He said last week he passed at the Maluleka SPAR and he saw people behaving as if things were back to normal.
“People were sitting and drinking alcohol, police were passing the area not even one person moved because they know that police will not take any action.”
Resident Moses Sandlane said he did not have a problem with the spinning in general as long as it is done “in a proper and responsible manner”.
“As long as they are not disturbing other motorists and it is done in an environment that is safe for the spectators then I am okay with it.”
Sandlane said although the spinning was done at a place that is far from any immediate danger, he was worried that people were not taking the lockdown regulation seriously.

“The problem is they are not wearing masks, and the same people will be going home to their loved ones who are elderly, I just fear that the virus might spread in that way.”
He said he would not be surprised if someone was not held responsible or arrested for organising these events.
“I do not think anyone has been arrested or made an example of otherwise no one would still be attending these things.
“I think it is easy to hold people responsible because these cars are in crews, so I think police should focus on arresting the ring leaders than the onlookers because onlookers will always be there.”
Constable Portia Sebone said the matter has been noted by authorities and more stop-and-search operations will be conducted.
She added that there will also be more police visibility around the problematic area.
