Leriba Hotel temporarily closed

"The sales of alcohol and tobacco are under tremendous pressure due to political decisions."

The Leriba hotel, situated in the heart of Centurion, having closed its doors temporarily recently, is only one of many businesses which have suffered since the lockdown started five months ago.

Owner and managing director Peet du Preez, however, said the 25-year-old, four- and five-star hotel would reopen its doors once the Covid-19 lockdown measures were relaxed.

Leriba has two award-winning restaurants, which offer a wide range of food and drinks.

Leriba and many other restaurants were forced to shut its doors because of the lockdown,” said Du Preez.

The lockdown affected the mining industry, the wine and alcohol industries, as well as the advertising and transport industries to mention only a few.

He said Leriba not only closed because of the alcohol ban, but also because all hotels were not allowed to function as a whole.

“The sales of alcohol and tobacco are under tremendous pressure due to political decisions. Some companies have suffered a 20% loss of income.

“Some even started to produce their own hand sanitizer, just to survive or to get any kind of income.

“The pandemic had a great effect on the tourism industry and advertising industry.”

For two consecutive years, the hotel has been rated as one of the top 100 greenest hotels across the globe in 2018 and 2019.

The Leriba hotel and conference centre is situated on 12 hectares of indigenous plants and trees, a variety of trees which help to muffle the sound of the surrounding neighbourhood.

“You would not say you are adjacent to the city at Leriba, we do our own recycling to minimal damage to the environment.

“I have received hundreds of calls from people who want to book the two restaurants [Hemingways and Chapters], but due to the regulations we had to turn them away,” said Du Preez.
