Woman assaulted during Villeria house invasion

"They demanded that she open the garage doors as they wanted to take the vehicle."

A woman from Villieria was held at gunpoint and assaulted when suspects gained access to her home on Wednesday.

Captain Coba Brits, communication officer Villieria police said that the complainant was at home when she suddenly saw two male suspects who both pointed handguns at her.

“She took her two small dogs outside and as she opened the back door the perpetrators stood next to her,” Brits said.

“They demanded that she open the garage doors as they wanted to take the vehicle. She explained that the power is off and the doors cannot open. She was told to lie down whereby she was kicked in the stomach and on her back.

“They took her inside and ransacked the house. Her house alarm went off and the suspects took her ring and jewellery and ran out and jumped over the neighbour’s wall,” she said.

“Both suspects were wearing balaclavas and spoke broken English. No shots were fired.”

Any information concerning the incident can be conveyed to the detective branch in Villieria.

Station commander, Colonel Silas Thoka thanked the community, security companies and members of the police for their reaction and their contribution in the prevention of crime in the area.

“I want to emphasise that the community need to work hand in hand with the police in providing necessary information of crime happening in the area,” he said.

– Know your neighbour. They are the closets to you if help is needed.
– Be observant of your surroundings at all times.
– Have details of the person you employ, an example copy of ID and if you want to make sure of their history let them apply for a clearance certificate.
– Register at a reliable and well-known security company.
– Install an alarm system that can also be linked to panic buttons.
– Electric fencing: Make sure it is in proper working condition at all times.
– Cameras and spot lights can be placed at strategic spots especially at entrance and exit points.
– Put measures in place so that the gate cannot be lifted from the rail.
– Ensure that the electric gate motor is secure and not reachable through the gate. The gate motor must be fixed with additional safety measurements to prevent it from being stolen.
