Cops launch manhunt for taxi operators’ killers

This after two taxi operators were killed in separate incidents on Friday.

Police launched a manhunt for the killers of two taxi operators.

They were fatally shot in two separate incidents in the west and Pretoria CBD on Friday afternoon.

“Taxi violence poses a huge threat to the safety and lives of innocent commuters. It is for this reason that the investigators must urgently deploy all available resources towards apprehending the perpetrators and decisively curbing this violence,” provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Mawela said.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said police responded to the first shooting at the corner of Lillian Ngoyi and Madiba streets at around 16:20.

“A 50-year-old man, later confirmed by a relative as a taxi operator, was fatally shot.

“The deceased was certified dead on the scene by paramedics,” she said, adding that the circumstances surrounding the shooting were unclear.

In the second incident in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, a 40-year-old taxi operator was reportedly shot and injured by unknown suspects while sitting inside the taxi.

“In this instance too, circumstances are unclear and under investigation,” Peters said, adding that they were appealing to any witnesses or those with information that could lead to the arrest of the alleged perpetrators to report it at their nearest police station.

Alternatively, witnesses and those with information could call the Crime Stop number 08600-10111 or use the police’s MySAPS app.

“Information may be given anonymously,” Peters said.
