More hands needed for East community clean-up, says organisers

The initiative is led by Lyttelton sector 4 Community Policing Sub Forum (LS4 CPSF), Welriet NPC, a non-profit organisation and Johnston.

Organisers have asked for more residents to take part in a local Pretoria East community clean-up initiative planned for this weekend.

“We need more hands-on board,” said former Ward 47 councillor Daryl Johnston.

The initiative is led by Lyttelton sector 4 Community Policing Sub Forum (LS4 CPSF), Welriet NPC, a non-profit organisation and Johnston.

They all called for more residents to take part in this bi-monthly community clean-up campaign.

“Residents are encouraged to join us for a few hours on a Saturday morning to help improve the community environment,” said Johnston.

The clean-up focuses on areas as Elarduspark, Wingate Park, Rietvalleirand and Rietvallei Park.

The initiative started last year and happens twice a month.

Speaking on the significance of the project, Johnston said: “It has a two-fold effect of improving the community environment as well as creating camaraderie amongst residents, who roll up their sleeves and work shoulder-to-shoulder in an effort to improve their suburbs.”

LS4 CPSF spokesperson Shawn Fouché said the initiative enabled the sector to invest directly to the well-being of the environment.

‘“It is also a great opportunity to get the community together and to teach younger children how to participate in such great initiatives and to care for their environment.

“We are working towards cleaning up our streets and making our parks a place for the community to come together, safe and clean. Encouraging the community to take pride in our suburbs.”

Welriet NPC’s Claudie Kannenberg said the initiative was not only good for cleaning the environment but also for social cohesion.

“We would especially like to see some young faces as they are the future of our society.”

Earlier this month, Lyttelton officers and other security cluster stakeholders embarked on a crime prevention unit, patrolling the streets of the area in the early hours of the morning.

“This is based on the SAPS community policing strategy and ongoing crime prevention strategy. Recently there has been a spike in crime in our area and we are fortunate enough to have received assistance.”

The next clean-up would be on 3 October.
