Centurion chase ends in arrest of two for suspected stolen car
The suspects ended-up in an accident following a chase by Centurion mall security.
Two suspects were arrested by the Lyttelton police for allegedly being in the possesion of a stolen car on Saturday morning.
Police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said the two were arrested around 07:35 in co-operation with the Tracker SA and Omega Security services of the Centurion mall.
The two suspects were involved in a collision on the corner of Embankment Road and Lenchen Avenue near the Centurion mall during a chase by the mall’s security officers.
Miller said the security officers alerted the police to a suspected stolen white Nissan X-Trail making the rounds at the mall.
“The vehicle was spotted by the mall security and once spotted the vehicle sped away from the mall and crashed.
“As a result of the collision, the Nissan X-Trail rolled and landed on its roof. The occupants got out and one passenger escaped through the parking area. The driver also tried to flee the scene but was apprehended by Omega security officer close to Centurion Rugby Club,” he said.
“Swift action and communication between officers and Lyttelton SAPS led to the two being detained”, Miller said.
“Both suspects were detained for possession of car-breaking implements and reckless and negligent driving.”
Miller said following the arrest it was later discovered that the Nissan X- Trail was reported robbed from the owner (hijacked) in June 2020, in the Mmakau area.
“Both suspects were then also detained for being in possession of a hijacked motor vehicle. No injuries were reported at the accident.’’
The mall management confirmed the incident.
