Five more planned sinkole repairs
While one sinkhole had been repaired thus far, the Tshwane metro was said to be on track with repairs for the financial year.
Five more sinkholes in Centurion are planned for repairs in the current financial year, according to Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said.
This comes just two weeks after the Tshwane metro announced the reopening of John Vorster Road, in Southdowns, following repair work to the sinkhole which appeared on 10 July 2018.
The other sinkholes that were expected to be repaired are in Southdowns, Queens Way, 518 Marthinus Street, 1008 Kruger Avenue and Sullivan Street in Lyttelton Manor.
Mashigo added that although it was “difficult” to estimate how much all of the planned repairs would cost, about R80-million was required.

Despite the multi-million rand price-tag attached to the repairs of all sinkholes, less than half of the amount had been allocated to the repair work of the sinkholes in the Centurion area.
Mashigo said R20-million had been allocated to repair these sinkholes.
While only one sinkhole – the one in Southdowns, Irene – was from the priority list from 2019, he revealed repair work was on track.
Though Mashigo said the metro was on track with planned repairs, there were around 10 new sinkholes which now required the metro’s attention.
In 2019, the metro confirmed there were a total of 29 sinkholes on its overall priority list, 26 of which were in the Centurion area.
“The metro will repair these as per the sinkhole prioritisation process,” Mashigo said.
The recently repaired sinkhole in Southdowns was said to have been completed at a total cost of R7.5-million, which was over more than R2-million less than the metro had initially budgeted.
The money saved from the project was expected to be redirected to repairing a “small” sinkhole in the region.
At the time of reopening the sinkhole, Tshwane metro head administrator Mpho Nawa said Ditshimega Projects and Training had been appointed to repair the sinkhole on 23 December 2019.
