Centurion father responsive after 1 week in ICU

A Facebook group was created to raise medical funds for him and by Monday, over R200 000 was raised.

A Centurion father, who was shot and wounded during an attempted robbery at a restaurant in the east of Pretoria, has regained consciousness after a week in ICU.

Wayne Giles (55) was shot while he and his partner Shana Stegmann were on their way to The Village restaurant in Hazelwood at 16th Street on 18 October.

He has been in the intensive care unit for a week while friends and family have raised funds to pay for his medical bills.

Giles’ friend Nabeel Khan confirmed on Monday that the 55-year-old father of two had regained consciousness and his recovery was going well.

“Wayne seems to be responsive to gestures and questions. He is on reduced oxygen and adrenaline. His MRI for the spinal cord was supposed to be today but has been moved to tomorrow,” he said.

A Facebook group called the Warrior Wayne Fund was created to raise R160 000 for Giles’ medical bills.

“So far we have managed to raise R235 000,” said Khan.

“We would like to thank everyone for their donations and prayers. It’s going to be a long road to recovery. We don’t know how much it would actually cost for his rehabilitation, but everyone is just happy that he’s making progress.”

No arrests have been made, according to police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela.

Anyone with information on the suspects can contact the Brooklyn police station on 012-366-1700.
