Issues of abuse, bullying raised in west informal settlement
The social development department visit schools and informal settlements annually to teach the learners about crime prevention and raise awareness about anti-bullying.
The social development department recently visited the Malusi Youth Development Organisation (MYDO) in Gomorrah, west of Pretoria, to raise awareness around child abuse and bullying at schools.
Department social worker Thalita Mgudi said they visit schools and informal settlements annually.
The theme for this year’s campaign was “My hands will not commit crime”.
“During these visits we teach learners about crime prevention,” she said.

“Because of the lockdown we were unable to visit schools like before so we visit the informal settlements instead.”
Mgudi said the department had noted that when schools close for holidays some learners turned to crime.
“We visited the schools to try and discourage this behaviour by engaging with the learners,” she said
Founder of MYDO Hlakudi Malatji encouraged learners not to get involved in any kind of crime as it could ruin their futures.
“Our after-school programme encourages learners to also report any sort of bullying they experience either at school or at home,” said Malatji.
Saulridge secondary school learner Princess Mohlala thanked the department for the visit.
“I really appreciate what the department has done for us,” she said.
