Villeria officer a force to be reckoned with

"My purpose in the police was and always will be to serve and protect the community."

Constable Rebecca Gafane (49), mother of two girls and member at Villieria police station, should not be underestimated.

She has been part of the police service since 2010 where she started her career in the visible policing environment.

Gafane was deployed in the client service centre where she attended to complaints and general crime prevention patrols.

Today she is in charge of the liquor and secondhand goods section where she assists the community to comply with necessary by-laws.

“My purpose in the police was and always will be to serve and protect the community,” she said.

During inspections on business premises, she can ensure that no illegal activities take place.

“It is an offence if these businesses deal with possible stolen items, therefore it is my task to ensure that copies of the seller and additional information are being recorded in the register.”

When it comes to chasing after criminals, she will show no fear in apprehending them.

During the past week, Gafane arrested a suspect trying to escape after being confronted during a routine roadblock.

“Chasing after the suspect in an overgrown field is no easy task. It is only afterwards that the danger of the situation will play off in my mind,” she said.

She added that working outside in the field assisting with crime prevention is definitely her first passion.
