East police nab pair for illegal firearm, ammo

The duo were arrested after police followed their reportedly suspicious vehicle from Hinterland Street.

Two people were arrested for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition during a routine crime prevention patrol conducted by police in Mamelodi east earlier this week.

“Police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties and patrols when they noticed a suspicious silver-grey Peugeot with two occupants driving along Hinterland Street,” police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane said.

“They immediately followed the vehicle until Morwamathamaga Street in 17 section.”

Police then searched the 30- and 36-year-old occupants and found two illegal firearms.

“One was found on the driver while the other was found on the passenger,” Mashiloane said.

The duo were subsequently arrested.

“The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in other serious and violent crimes,” Mashiloane said, adding that an investigation was underway.

“The suspects will be profiled for possible linkage to previous crimes.”

Meanwhile, Mamelodi east police station commander Brigadier Terence Naidoo commended his members for a job well done for removing illegal firearms from the hands of criminals who were allegedly terrorising the community.

Naidoo said they had, with great concern, noted violent crimes which were occurring on their streets, including murder and hijackings.

“We have measures in place to curb this – the massive development of men and women in blue around Mamelodi east are ensuring that guns are off the streets,” Naidoo said.

The duo were expected to appear in the Mamelodi magistrate’s court soon.
