Bushiri did not report at police station as requested – Hawks
The self-proclaimed “prophet” and his wife have reportedly fled the country, meaning they have contravened their bail conditions.
Self-proclaimed “prophet” Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary contravened their bail conditions by failing to report to a police station, the Hawks confirmed on Saturday.
The couple had to report to the police station on Monday and Friday between 6:00 and 18:00; however, they failed to do so on Friday, according to the Hawks.
This follows after Bushiri said in a statement posted on Saturday morning on Facebook that he and his wife arrived in Malawi, citing “safety and security reasons”.
The Bushiris and three other co-accused are facing charges of fraud, money laundering and contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.
“There are unconfirmed reports that Bushiri and his wife have absconded from South Africa which is in contravention of their bail conditions as set in the Pretoria magistrate’s court,” said Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale.
“At this stage, we can confirm that he did not report at the police station as requested and agreed upon, which is also an act of contravention of the court order.
“Investigators and prosecutors have been working tirelessly since it came to light that he did not report at the station,” she said.
Mogale said an investigation around the failure to comply with the court order was underway.
Bushiri’s “fleeing” comes a week after the couple was granted R200 000 bail at the Pretoria magistrate’s court.
