West Pastor assaulted by alleged taxi drivers

“From a distance I saw how they pulled my husband out the car and started hitting him with objects and kicking him,”

A pastor from Hercules, west of Pretoria was brutally assaulted on Wednesday morning, allegedly by protesting taxi drivers.

Pastor Joel Johannes Peens and his wife Santie were on their way to a nearby pharmacy when they were blocked off by a taxi and another vehicle at the corner of Hendrik and Van der Hof streets.

Santie said the men got out of the two vehicles with weapons and approached her and the husband.

“All I could remember was that my husband told me I should run to safety.

“From a distance, I saw how they pulled my husband out of the car. They started hitting him with objects and kicking him. They also damaged our vehicle. Shortly after, they sped off, leaving my husband in a critical condition,” said Santie.

Santie said she took her husband to the nearest hospital for treatment.

She said they will open a case at the police station later today.
