Exciting new film ‘Kaalgat Karel’ – a proudly South African production

'Kaalgat Karel' tells the story of Karel Venter (Francois Jacobs), a thirty-year-old guy who loves the thrill and accompanying social media stardom of streaking during sports matches.

The wait is finally over, Boondogle Films and the team behind the brand-new Romcom, Kaalgat Karel, are proud to announce the release of the film’s official trailer, which will provide a first glimpse into what can be expected from this tummy-tickling tale.

Kaalgat Karel tells the story of Karel Venter (Francois Jacobs), a 30-year-old guy who loves the thrill and accompanying social media stardom of streaking during sports matches. He falls head-over-heels for the paramedic, Rita (Christia Visser), who saves him after a streak gone wrong, but there’s a problem; she’s a strait-laced single mum who has no interest in his streaking shenanigans.

“This is a movie about a man who is passionate about life and the people that he cares about,” says Francois Jacobs who is brilliant in the lead role of this hilarious love story. “It also shows that light can be found even in the darkest circumstances.”

Produced and written by Paul Egan and Meg Rickards (who is also the director), the film promises some incredibly funny laughs combined with a powerful message and some heartfelt personal revelations that will keep audiences captivated until the credits start rolling.

Aside from brilliant cinematography and an impressive soundtrack created by Loki Rothman, the movie also boasts a star-studded cast with Schalk Bezuidenhout as Karel’s friend and roommate Flip, Siv Ngesi as Vuyo, Karel’s streaking rival, Tracey-Lee Oliver as Rita’s best friend and fellow paramedic, Rosebelle Clasen as Rita’s daughter Bella and Eden Classens in the role of the glamorous plastic surgeon Jean-Pierre du Toit.

The theme song “Altyd Op Vakansie” was written by Jack Parow and Loki Rothman. It not only contributes to the relaxed vibe of the film, but also contains all the necessary ingredients of a bona fide summer hit that is set to remain popular for years to come.

“Kaalgat Karel is 100% proudly South African. It offers some hilariously funny moments and deeply touching ones that audiences of all ages can relate to,” explains Christia Visser who is best-known for her roles in South African films like Tess, Hollywood in my Huis and Ballade vir ’n Enkeling.

The film was produced in co-operation with kykNET, the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC), the Eastern Cape Provincial Arts and Culture Council (ECPACC), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and its brand integration partners, Galito’s, Red Alert and the Hathaway Group of Guesthouses. It is distributed locally by Filmfinity (Pty) Ltd. and will start showing in theatres nationwide on 12 February 2021.

“We can’t wait to share our trailer and to give South Africans a glimpse into our new movie. We think it really captures the joy and fun that is Kaalgat Karel, while tantalising viewers with the question: what happens when Karel, who is addicted to the adrenalin and online fame that streaking brings, falls in love with a woman who disapproves of his shenanigans?” director Meg Rickards concludes.
