Garsfontein police urge gun owners to hand in their arms

Gun owners are given time to hand in their firearms and ammunition for destruction and renewal of a competency certificate and a valid licence.

 

Garsfontein police have sent a reminder to members of the community on the lapsing of the firearm amnesty period at the end of January.

Police spokeperson Captain Duane Lightfoot urged people to take advantage of this period, to hand in firearms and ammunition either for destruction or renewal of a competency certificate and a valid licence.

“All firearms that have been handed in will undergo ballistic testing to ensure that they have not been used in the commission of any crimes, before they can be considered for destruction,” he said.

For any firearm amnesty enquiries, owners were advised to contact the designated firearm officer at the station at 012-472-0276 or the FLASH call center on 012-353-6111.

An email can also be sent to cfrenquiry@saps.gov.za.

Lightfoot said gun owners can avoid standing in long queues by reacting in due time.

The final date for the amnesty period with be on 31 January 2021.
