Wierdabrug police warn residents to be vigilant at all times

“Especially check whether you are being followed, and do not enter your gate when you note a suspicious vehicle. Drive to a safe place.”

Wierdabrug police station is warning residents to be vigilant when driving in the area after three smash-and-grab cases were reported recently.

“Residents must especially be vigilant on the N14 and R55, last week’s incidents occurred there when it was dark,” said SAPS Wierdabrug spokesperson, Sergeant Divine Nkuna.

Nkuna said burglaries occur every day in all areas.

“Nine burglaries were reported last week in The Reeds, Rooihuiskraal, Wierdapark and Clubview, mostly during the day when residents are not home.

“Stolen items were mostly electrical appliances and jewellery.”

Nkuna said an estimated two to three cases of hijackings are reported weekly.

“People fall prey to hijackings mostly in their driveways, when they return from work or from shops. Residents must take note of their surroundings as well as other vehicles when they drive home,” he advised.

“Especially check whether you are being followed, and do not enter your gate when you note a suspicious vehicle. Drive to a safe place.”

In respect of residents enquiring about firearm licences, Nkuna requested people waiting for their email of approval to be patient.

“We are now receiving responses for applications which were submitted in November last year. We are still dealing with the backlog.”

Nkuna said there is still a backlog resulting from an influx of reapplications of firearm licences made during the previous amnesty period.

“Residents who have received their SMS’s of approval can always come to check at the station, but it can take between six months and a year.”

Firearm registration applicants may direct enquiries related to their applications to the FLASH Call Centre: 012-353-6111 or cfrenquiry@saps.gov.za.
