More chemo ahead of boy’s 9th birthday
Danie underwent surgery on Monday to remove the remaining cancer from his little hand.
An eight-year-old from Capital Park’s birthday plans have been dampened by the eight sessions of chemotherapy that lie ahead for him. Young Danie Kruger will be celebrating his ninth birthday on 2 April.
He is battling an advanced form of Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer in his right hand.
Sanet Gouws, Danie’s grandmother, told Rekord that the young warrior endured a painful operation on Monday, to remove the rest of the cancer cells in his hand, after having his right middle finger removed the week before.
“This was necessary because the doctor attempted to cut away at any and all cancer that was left growing in his little hand.
“The finger that was removed was due to the cancer being too far spread in the bone in that part of the hand. He now has to start the first of eight chemo sessions on 29 March, to prevent the cancer from growing again. The doctor is satisfied with the operation and feels that it was successful,” Gouws told Rekord.
Gouws said Danie had a tough start to life, as he was born with a defect in his right elbow, but the family later learned that he was indeed born without the right elbow.
He was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma in his right hand on 20 September 2020, after coming home with a swollen hand.
Danie also lost his father in June 2020.
“Through all of this, Danie remained strong and positive, he has the will power of a true warrior and looks forward to getting healthy so he can go on with life once again.
“Danie will turn nine years old on 2 April, and although he’ll be quite sick and weak from the chemo, we want to do something special for him and his younger sister Kaylie.
“Danie is so brave, he has taken on every challenge during this time with exceptional strength. I want to treat this little family to a breakaway to Warmbad (Bela Bela) before his eight sessions on chemo officially starts,” Gouws said.
She wants to thank everybody who has contributed in any way. Many have donated Xbox games to Danie’s collection.
“We really appreciate it. We look forward to having a great few days with Danie to celebrate his birthday before his treatment starts up again.”
Gouws told Rekord that according to the doctors, Ewing’s Sarcoma was one of the rarest cancers among children, but that children around the ages of 10 and 15 were most likely to get it.
“Only 1% of children with cancer, are diagnosed with Ewing’s,” she said.

Danie is an exemplary learner at school while battling this deadly disease. In 2020 he completed grade 2 at Laerskool Mayville where he received two golden certificates for outstanding schoolwork.
“He is currently learning online, which has benefited him so much, and has made things easier due to Covid.”
