Police warn against perjury as a man who “staged a hijacking” appears in court
“During an interview by the investigating officer from SAPS Brooklyn, it was found that the motor vehicle was given to the suspect by the victim. The alleged victim is a friend of the alleged suspect and the original owner of the vehicle.”
Police have warned against reporting of false cases as a man is facing charges of perjury after a “staged hijacking” incident.
The man appeared at the Hatfield magistrate’s court on Friday.
Brooklyn police spokesperson Sergeant Webster Scheepers said police opened a perjury case against the 27-year-old man who first alleged that he was a victim of crime but later it was discovered that he lied.
“A 27-year-old man opened a hijacking case at Pretoria West SAPS on 4 March 2021. He alleged he was hijacked when he was travelling from Atteridgeville to Pretoria West.”
Scheepers said on 25 March the police arrested a 37-year-old male for being in possession of the suspected stolen vehicle in the Brooklyn area.
“During an interview by the investigating officer from SAPS Brooklyn, it was found that the motor vehicle was given to the suspect by the victim.
“The alleged victim is a friend of the alleged suspect and the original owner of the vehicle. The investigating officer contacted the victim, and during the interview, the complainant admitted that he knows the suspect who was arrested and that he gave the motor vehicle to him.”
A case of perjury has since been opened. Scheepers said the police have not not yet discovered the motive behind the original case and a decision to prosecute the man would have to be made by a senior public prosecutor.
“Brooklyn SAPS wants members of the public to refrain from reporting false cases as this constitutes a crime. Suspects will face the full force of the law when caught.”
