Multidisciplinary operations lead to 420 arrests in CBD
This past weekend, more than five unlicensed firearms and ammunition were recovered.
Tshwane District police worked tirelessly over the weekend and as a result, managed to make a total of 420 arrests.
The multidisciplinary operations were held in different areas in Pretoria between Friday and Sunday, said police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe.
This past weekend, more than five unlicenced firearms and ammunition were recovered during multiple simultaneous crime prevention operations across Tshwane.
In one of the successes, Kameeldrift police and Tshwane metro police received information to be on the lookout for a hijacked Toyota Run X.
“The officers identified the vehicle and gave chase on the N1 and the R573 Moloto Road. They managed to stop the vehicle and two suspects were apprehended,” Selepe said.
Two unlicenced firearms and ammunition were seized.
On Friday, Tracing Task Team and crime prevention received a tip-off about a vehicle that was used in a business robbery at SPAR, Tsamaya Road in Mamelodi, Selepe said.
“Upon arrival, police found an AK-47 rifle with two magazines loaded with ammunition. Two vehicles, a Toyota Quest and Fiat UNO, suspected to be stolen and being used in the robbery, were also seized,” she said.
Two suspects were arrested while three others managed to flee the scene.
In Olievenhoutbosch, an integrated crime prevention operation, consisting of Tshwane metro police, police and a security company led to an arrest of four suspects.
The team received information about suspects being in possession of unlicenced firearms planning to commit business robberies.
“Information was followed up and led to one suspect in Atteridgeville who was found to be in possession of an unlicenced firearm that was reported stolen in Erasmia in 2018.
“Furthermore, three more suspects were found inside a Toyota Avanza with unlicenced firearms and loaded ammunition. The vehicle was seized for further investigation,” Selepe said.
She said the firearms would be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain whether they have been previously used in the commission of crimes.
Other suspects were apprehended for various crimes such as hijacked vehicles, theft of motor vehicles, business robberies, possession of unlicenced firearms and ammunition, driving under the influence of alcohol, selling alcohol without a trading licence, rape, narcotic crimes, illegal immigrants, theft and house robberies.
People arrested over the weekend are expected to appear in various courts in the Tshwane region.
