Police concerned about mugging increase in north
"We previously received cases of robberies, rapes, assaults and to an extent of murders, but our community still prefers to ignore these warnings."
Police said they have noted with great concern the increase in muggings happening in the veld near the offices of the department of labour and Ga-Rankuwa city centre.
Police spokesperson Shimi Tsheole said despite the warnings they have given residents several times to avoid that footpath, their warnings seemingly fell on deaf ears.
“We previously received cases of robbery, rape, assault and to an extent of murder, but our community still ignore these warnings.
“The police are trying, by all means, to focus on patrols in that area, but as soon as they leave, robbers pounce on unsuspecting victims.”
Tsheole urged residents to take heed of the following safety tips :
– Always observe your surroundings.
– Be alert at all times whenever you walk.
– Walk close to the pavement facing oncoming traffic.
– Keep to well-lit areas or close to other people.
– Never take a ride with a stranger.
– Always carry a whistle that you can blow if you need help.
“All suspicious activities must be reported to the Crime Stop number 08600-10111 or My SAPS app. Whistle-blowers may remain anonymous.”
