Nearly 500 busted in Tshwane police operations
Overall, a total of 1470 suspects were arrested during various operations conducted by police across the province at the weekend.
Nearly 500 people were arrested during operations held by police officers in the Tshwane district at the weekend.
Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele said the 496 suspects were arrested on charges which included possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle, possession of suspected stolen property, malicious damage to property, car hijacking, kidnapping, fraud, attempted murder and driving under the influence of alcohol, among others.
Overall, Makhubele said 1 470 people were arrested by police across the province at the weekend.
In one of the operations, 12 suspected illegal miners were arrested in Krugersdorp, in the West Rand, on Saturday.
“The suspects were shooting each other and when police responded, they started shooting at the police who also returned fire,” he said.
One suspect was shot and injured and was taken to hospital.

The suspect remained under police guard.
“The other suspects surrendered and two unlicenced firearms were recovered,” Makhubele said.
At least 350 suspects, overall, were arrested in the district and in Sedibeng for crimes which included attempted murder, possession of an unlicenced firearm, dealing in drugs, driving under the influence of alcohol and assault.
A further 447 suspects were also said to have been arrested when police conducted an integrated operation in the Ekurhuleni district.
Makhubele said another 44 suspects were arrested during an O Kae Molao operation which was led by provincial community safety MEC Faith Mazibuko and her police counterpart commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela in Alexandra on Saturday.
These suspects were arrested on charges which included possession of suspected stolen property, possession of drugs, possession of an unlicenced firearm and driving under the influence of alcohol.
“Other 186 suspects were arrested in the Johannesburg district,” Makhubele said.
All those arrested were expected to appear in court soon.
