Pedestrian robberies on the rise in Centurion
In terms of safety tips, Lyttelton police urge people to try to conceal all valuables as much as possible.

Lyttelton police are concerned about the increase in the number of armed robberies in Centurion.
There has been a sharp increase in pedestrian robberies of late, especially around the Lyttelton CBD, said police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.
“In most cases, the victims are robbed by two to three men armed with a firearm and a knife. The suspects approach the victims on foot and demand their valuables,” Miller said.
The second modus operandi is where a group of guys drive around in a vehicle and stop next to the victim before robbing the pedestrian of their belongings.
Miller said that pedestrians should always be alert of such random vehicles carrying a group of males.
In terms of safety tips, Lyttelton police urged people to try to conceal all valuables as much as possible.
– If you are walking and listening to music with your earphones, try to use only one so you are able to listen to your surroundings.
– If you are walking on your own in a certain direction and you see a group of men in front of you, cross over to the other side of the road. If you see them cross over as well, it might be a good idea to turn around and backtrack.
– If you are a victim of armed robbery, try to get as many details about the suspect as possible. It will help police when they track down the suspects.
Some of the hotspots include:
– West Avenue and Hendrik Verwoerd Drive.
– Hendrik Verwoerd Drive going over from CBD towards the Wierdabrug side.
– West and South streets (next to SuperSport Park).
