Ex-bookkeeper arrested for R2.1-m fraud

“Bezuidenhout was a bookkeeper at a Gezina based company, Van Opstal Masjiene.”

A 53-year-old Gezina woman, who was arrested for allegedly transferring R2.1-million from her employer’s business account to her bank account, has appeared in court.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu said it was alleged that the suspect, Gladys Pear Bezuidenhout, committed fraud and theft between 2015 and 2017.

“Bezuidenhout was a bookkeeper at a Gezina-based company, Van Opstal Masjiene.

“She allegedly transferred approximately R2.1-million, without authorisation from her former employer’s business account, into her bank account.”

Mulamu said the suspect was arrested by the Hawks’ serious commercial crime investigation unit in Pretoria, after she handed herself in to police custody accompanied by her legal representative last week Thursday.

“She was subsequently charged for fraud and appeared in court on the same day,” said Mulamu said, adding that she was granted R10 000 bail.

The case was postponed to 22 July, for docket contents disclosure.
