Police clean-up operations net 400 suspects in Pretoria

Of the 400 arrested persons, a large number of violations were liquor-related.

More than 400 people were arrested in various police operations throughout Pretoria at the weekend.

Police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said the arrests came after certain crime trends were identified and analysed in the district, and members deployed strategically within problematic areas.

The operations were led by the district commissioner Major-General Hilda Mohajane.

“We as the Tshwane district will do everything in our power to ensure that the criminals feel our actions, and have nowhere to hide. We will continue to apply pressure to those who do not want to comply with the law,” Mohajane said.

“We wish to communicate to our community that there will be no tolerance for criminals in our society.”

Of the 400 arrested persons, a large number of violations were liquor-related.

In the north of Pretoria, six unlicensed liquor outlets and five unauthorised spaza shops were shut down, while suspects were arrested for possession of drugs and stolen property, according to Miller.

“In the west of Pretoria, two liquor outlets were fined for dealing in illicit liquor, two fines were issued for unlawfully dealing in second-hand goods, and 10 people were arrested for possession of drugs,” he said.

“In addition, in Mamelodi, two people were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.”

Across Pretoria, a total of nine liquor outlets that were non-compliant with the Liquor and/or Disaster Management Act, were shut down.

Miller said alcohol-related incidents were still a matter of concern especially during the third wave of Covid-19 infections.

“We would like to take this opportunity to remind residents that we need to be responsible and mature when it comes to alcohol,” he said.

“The district commissioner gave specific praise and thanks to the members who were involved in all the operations, and specifically where unlicensed firearms were recovered, and where suspects were arrested for crimes against women and children.”
