Lyttelton police may link suspect to other robberies in area

The team were strategically situated and around 01:00 the members heard someone screaming for help.

The Lyttelton police have made a major breakthrough in a series of house robberies that have been occurring during the last two months.

Spokesperson for Lyttelton police Captain Dave Miller said in a multi-disciplinary operation consisting of members of the police, CPF members and various security companies, Lyttelton police station executed an operational plan in order to put a stop to the robberies taking place in the Hoewes area.

He said on Tuesday the team were strategically situated and around 01:00 the members heard someone screaming for help.

“After establishing where it was coming from, they were able to gain access to the property.”

He said the security reaction officers were already at the premises after they have received a panic alarm.

“Due to the excellent teamwork and quick response, one suspect was apprehended, unfortunately, the other suspects were able to make a getaway before the team arrived.”

Miller said the suspect will face charges of attempted housebreaking, and possession of house-breaking implements. He will appear in court within 48 hours.

“We are currently following up all leads and information and hope to make further arrests soon. We will be looking at the possibility of linking the arrested suspect to several of the house breakings and house robberies that have taken place recently.

“We would like to thank the team for their dedication and determination, especially braving the cold weather in the early hours of the morning.”
