Hundreds arrested in weekend operations

Overall, more than 1200 were said to have been arrested at the weekend in the province.

Hundreds of people were arrested during operations conducted at the weekend in Tshwane, police said.

Spokesperson Captain Jeff Phora said at least 300 suspects were arrested in the Tshwane district while 533 others were arrested in Ekurhuleni with 105 others nabbed in the West Rand and 121 In the Sedibeng district.

Overall, more than 1 200 were said to have been arrested at the weekend in the province.

Of these, a total of 59 suspects were said to have been arrested on Saturday evening during an O Kae Molao operation led by acting provincial commissioner Major-General Tommy Mthombeni and Johannesburg district commissioner Major-General Max Masha alongside Gauteng community safety MEC Faith Mazibuko in Eldorado Park, south of Johannesburg.

Phora said these suspects were for a variety of offences, including failure to adhere to the disaster management act.

The weekly operations were not only conducted to clamp down on crime, but to also ensure communities adhered to lockdown restrictions.

Two liquor outlets and their owners were arrested from dealing in liquor without valid licences and contravening the disaster management act during these operations.

Phora explained that additional offences, which those arrested had committed, included driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of dangerous weapons.

A total of 125 suspects were also said to have been traced for various crimes during an operation by detectives.

During the closure of one of the liquor outlets, acting provincial commissioner Major-General Tommy Mthombeni said: “These operations will continue until our communities understand the danger of this pandemic and respect the lockdown restriction that accompany it.”

All suspects were expected to appear in court soon.
