Hundreds nabbed in police operations
More than 997 suspects were arrested during similar operations across the province.
At least 250 people were arrested during O Kae Molao operations conducted by police across the Tshwane district at the weekend.
Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele said the suspects were found to have committed various offences.
These included assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of drugs, dealing in dagga, murder, fraud, housebreaking and theft, reckless and negligent driving, and possession of suspected stolen property.
At least 180, 200 and 113 suspects were arrested in the Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng districts respectively during similar operations on similar charges.
More than 997 suspects were arrested during similar operations across the province.
During one of these operations, 17 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and six others for contravention of level 4 lock regulations, including transporting liquor.
Operations were headed by Gauteng acting police commissioner Major-General Tommy Mthombeni, West Rand district commissioner Major-General Fred Kekane and provincial community safety MEC Faith Mazibuko.
The operation in the West Rand commenced with a roadblocks in both Krugersdorp and Muldersdrift on Saturday evening, and concluded in the early hours on Sunday.
“They then proceeded to a popular illegal mining place in Krugersdorp and Munsieville to enforce Covid-19 adjusted level 4 lockdown regulations,” Makhubele said.
Upon arrival, stop-and-searches were held and an undisclosed number of people were arrested for drinking in public during curfew hours.
“Six more people were also arrested for failure to confine to a place of residence during curfew time and for not wearing a mask in public areas after they were ordered to do so,” he said.
Four illegal immigrants were also said to have been arrested and processed by officials from the home affairs department.
Makhubele said a total of 178 suspects were arrested overall during the West Rand district’s O Kae Molao operation.
