Capital Park resident proud to have the floating trophy in his yard

"Gardening is my passion and one of my relaxation methods."

The latest winners of the well-maintained Capital Park sidewalk have been announced and the floating trophy will now for the month of July boast in the front yard of the Cronje family.

The initiative of the competition was launched by Capital Park Residents and Ratepayers Association (Caprra).

Philip and his wife Sonja Cronje have been living in this house on the corner of 7th Avenue and Malherbe Street in Capital Park for the past 36 years.

“We enjoy living in Capital Park and the main reason that we bought this house, was because it was close to where I worked,” Philip said.

One could hear the excitement in his voice when he speaks about his garden.

“I regularly clean out bushes and weeds and by the grace of our creator, we hope that the raining season is enough to keep the yard colourful.

“My garden is my life,” said Philip who has suffered two strokes before – the latest at the beginning of the year, but it did not hold him back to look after his yard.

“Gardening is my passion and one of my relaxation methods.

“I also go fishing as this is where I have time to talk to myself and to work through what is going on in my mind.”

The Cronje family do have a gardener who helps them out from time to time.

“My plants are like my children. My favourite place in the yard is where my loved ones and friends sit and enjoy spending time in each other’s company.”

They have known about this competition for several months and did the necessary effort to welcome the trophy to their front yard.

“We have known Mike (Burt of Cappra) for many years and the trophy is our pride.

Fast facts about the trophy
– The first floating trophy was handed out for the first time three years ago.
– The trophy is sponsored annually by Talkings Pots.
– The trophy has travelled to more than 30 different sidewalks.
– An annual winner of the year is named at the end of each year where they would receive a prize.
– For the first time, two winners are announced monthly where in the past only one winner of the month was announced.

“I worked to have the trophy in front of my yard one day and finally after all this time, residents in Capital Park can now look at our yard to see what a neat sidewalk looks like.

“We are a family in this area and therefore all our residents work together so that our area is equally neat.

“It is lovely to see how many families work together as one over a weekend in order to sustain a well-maintained sidewalk,” said Philip.
