Residents face arrest for breaking lockdown rules
More people arrested for failing to adhere to lockdown restrictions recently.
Wonderboompoort police urged Moot residents not to violate lockdown regulations, which although relaxed, still stood at level 3.
Police warned those found in violation of the regulations would be arrested.
The warning followed several arrests in Wonderboompoort policing precinct for failing to adhere to the disaster management act (DMA).
“We have arrested most people recently for the violation of the disaster management act regulations,” Wonderboompoort police spokesperson Constable Mandlakayise Zwane told Rekord.
Zwane said arrested people included those who violated curfew times and drank alcohol excessively “to the point that they became a danger to themselves and to others”.
Although the regulations have been relaxed to adjusted level 3, and alcohol sales were permitted, community members were still expected to behave in a responsible manner, Zwane said.
“People should refrain from drinking alcohol beyond the restricted time.”
He said police would enforce both the Gauteng liquor act and DMA regulations to maintain law and order in the area.
He added that people should understand the aim of enforcing the law was not about arresting people but to encourage them to do the right thing to save lives.
According to the Department of Health, the death toll for Covid-19 related illnesses stood at 70 388 in South Africa as of Tuesday.
Gauteng has recorded 16 518 so far.
“It is therefore important for all members of the community to act in a responsible manner and protect one another from the pandemic.”
He urged residents to continue washing or sanitising hands, wearing masks, keeping social distancing and avoid crowded areas.
