Eersterust residents warned to beware of jewellery scam

“This crook mostly cons senior citizens.”

Eersterust residents were warned of a scammer cheating locals out of their jewellery in the area.

“The man would tell his victims that he buys up old jewellery,” said Patriotic Alliance spokesperson Virginia Keppler.

“He would then use a bottle of liquid to ‘clean’ the jewellery before weighing it. The liquid would, however, turn the jewellery black and he would tell his victims that this meant that the jewellery in question wasn’t pure gold.

“He then offers to remove the black stains, but then never returns the jewellery.”

The man has been operating in the area for a couple of months now, according to Keppler.

He was last seen operating in Wynberg Avenue on Monday.

“He has targeted numerous victims in Allie, St Joseph and Ivan Beckett avenues,” she said.

She encouraged people to come forward and open a case at the police.

“This crook mostly cons senior citizens.”

Keppler also warned residents, especially women and pensioners, not to trust any strangers because they are vulnerable and alone at home.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Shibambo asked residents to come forward with any information.

“Nobody has reported this suspect as yet.

“As soon as someone reports him, we can look into the case,” he said.
