Tiyani Mabunda announces his Downs departure in emotional video
“It is not easy to say goodbye to a club that has given me so much and put me on the platform I am on now."
Mamelodi Sundowns have announced the departure of midfielder Tiyani Mabunda from the club.
The 33-year-old joined the Pretoria club from Black Leopards back in 2013. Under then coach Pitso Mosimane, Mabunda established himself as one of the key players for the Brazilians over the years, helping the club to multiple PSL titles, CAF Championship and other domestic accolades.
On Tuesday, Mabunda posted an emotional video thanking the fans and the club for their support.
“My story is one of the unique stories told in this country because when I came to this club nobody really knew about me. I have been through any kind of up and down you can think of. If you think about a bad time, look at my story and if you think of a good time, look at my story. It was a really special journey I walked with the club through thick and thin,” Mabunda said in the video.
“The club has always been in support of me and my career and I also had to give my all regardless of whether I was on the field of play or not. I was always the number 1 supporter of the club.”
Mabunda said he was satisfied with how his career at Sundowns turned out
“It is a very emotional time for me to be here at the training ground. This place will always be in my heart. I have fulfilled almost everything a footballer would have wanted to achieve and those things were started and initiated on this training field. It has been a wonderful and exciting journey. It is not easy to be in this position but it was worth it to be on this training ground,” he said.
“I feel the time has come to move on to another phase of my life or assignment.
“It is not easy to say goodbye to a club that has given me so much and put me on the platform I am on now. Everything good does have an end.”
Mamelodi Sundowns also posted a tribute message on their social media page for Mabunda.
“For all the years of service, for all the trophies and the happy memories, we say thank you. Farewell and good luck Shuga, you’ll always be ForeverYellow,” the club said.
