Short film premiere a glorious affair

"Writing has always been one of my passions and being able to create this piece of art for us finalists was truly amazing."

The SterStatus short film premiere, Pienk Vellies, was held during a glamorous event at Diep in die Berg in Wapadrand in Pretoria east on Wednesday evening.

The film was written, filmed and directed by the SterStatus finalists of 2020.

This project only had two weeks of planning and 48 hours of filming time.

It is set in South Africa and follows the life of Nina de Wildt.

The film starts where she makes her way up to the church in a beautiful white wedding dress and her famous pink Vellies.

Here we see De Wildt gets flashbacks, on how her life was and how everything will be before it changes, again.

De Wildt, a farm girl, grew up on a Wildebeest farm with her parents and sister.

Unfortunately, something happens which leaves her to grow up quickly, make certain life choices of her own and run the family farm. Luckily for her, she has a fairy godmother and good friends throughout her life, which makes things easier for the character.

Director, Stephen Segal, also had the opportunity to direct his first short film and stated that from a director’s point of view, it was refreshing to work with a group of dynamic and driven women who knew what it took to create a successful project.

“Women empowerment in the film industry is definitely looking bright if this is the pace we keep on working towards,” he said.

Writer and actress, Zeldine Fourie, was one of the mentors to help get the finalists ready for the filming of the short film.

She said for her it was a phenomenal experience to work with a group of women who only had two weeks to create a project that only had 48 hours to be filmed.

“They were astonishing,” she said.

The current winner of Sterstatus, Charné Kemp, had the opportunity to write Pienk Vellies and work alongside the brilliant Segal as assistant director.

“Writing has always been one of my passions and being able to create this piece of art for us finalists was truly amazing.

“I tried to give each finalist her time to shine in the little time we had.

“Overall, this project was a huge success, because the finalists were so professional and fun to work with,” she said.

The cast of this short film includes the SterStatus’ top 12 finalists of 2020, Phia-Ri Olivier, Danelle Dreyer, Bianca Rautenbach, Evelyn Maruping, Christina Pretorius, Palesa Masuku, Jaylene Guest, Sharoney Viljoen, Chrizelle Joubert, Jeannemy Greyling, Charné Kemp, Karin da Silva and a special appearance by Deon Groot.
