Mamelodi Newcastle United to compete in second division

Mamelodi Newcastle United ready to compete in the ABC Motsepe League after winning the Safa Gauteng Men’s Regional League playoffs last Saturday at the Vaal University of Technology in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng.

The newly promoted Mamelodi Newcastle United promised to give other soccer teams a tough competition in the ABC Motsepe League.

“Playing against us will not be a walk in the park,” Mamelodi Newcastle United head coach Themba Moabelo told Rekord.

“We are not in the new league to add numbers but to compete.”

This after the local side won the Safa Gauteng Men’s Regional League playoffs last Saturday at the Vaal University of Technology in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng.

The victory qualified them to advance to the second division and overall third tier of South African football, ABC Motsepe League.

Their outstanding performance in the play-offs saw United completing the tournament on top of the log standing with 10 points in four matches, which confirmed their earlier statement citing that they were ready for the competition.

This follows a dramatic twist in the second leg of the competition, when United won both of their games of the day and moved from the second spot to the top of the log standing. In this leg, which served as the final part of the play-offs, they defeated ZK FC and Real Barcelona 4-0 and 3-1 respectively.

Beating the then-log leaders, Real Barcelona, was a bonus for them as their primary aim was to win their the first match against ZK FC and draw the next to secure at least the second top position of the log standing.

This was because of the fact that two teams on top of the log standing automatically qualify for promotion. Their dedication and eagerness to achieve the best results saw them taking the lead.

Another team that acquired promotion was Alexandra Gunners FC while Real Barcelona, which was on top of the log standing in the first leg, failed to advance to ABC Motsepe League after dropping to third.

Gunners was promoted to the next league level after beating Sibiya FC and Real Barcelona 4-0 and 2-1 respectively.

The ABC Motsepe League is the current second division and overall third tier of South African football.
