Grade 7 learners in top 5 in international robot competition

"They did an amazing job and the projects they produced are innovative and ground-breaking.”

In a recent Global Inspired Builds Robotics 2021 competition hosted in London, two Reddford House grade 7 teams from South Africa both made it to the top five.

The competition involved 15 schools from different countries. South Africa’s Reddford House had two teams competing.

Each team had to build a robot to this year’s theme: “enabling movement”.

“The judging criteria included intelligent design, general appeal, innovation, and quality of programming,” said spokesperson of Reddford House Ronel Burger

The competition hosted by the international schools’ group, Inspired Group, was aimed at empowering learners so that they could one day build successful careers in the fast-growing STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) sectors and thrive in the digital world.

“The first team’s robot was called Covid K9 and is designed to test people’s temperatures. It responds with an appealing canine bark of approval if temperatures are normal, and with a growl if it is too high,” said Ronel

“K9 also features sanitiser for use before testing, a sensor to begin a movement, and another to measure temperatures, and it also moves, sits, and wags its tail.”

Burger added all the learners were excited and happy to have won.

“The team members all agreed that winning was like a dream come true for them and that through the competition their coding skills improved,” he said.

Masotsha Mathivha from Reddford House The Hills, Pretoria east was part of the first team.

“It’s an amazing feat because I got to rank myself not only locally, but on a global stage and see what I could do to eventually become the best,” said Mathivha.
